New Top Gun: Maverick Trailer Is Full Of Pulse-Pounding Flight Scenes

18 December, 2019

Tom Cruise has played many iconic roles throughout the years, including his starring role in Top Gun as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. That 1986 action film put Cruise behind the cock pit, remains an iconic piece of pop culture. And with nostalgia continuing to influence the entertainment world, the 57 year-old actor will reprise his role for the long awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick. The upcoming movie's first trailer arrived a while back, but a new has been released which includes plenty of new footage, including thrilling flight sequences.

Top Gun: Maverick will arrive decades after the original movie, and was directed by Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski. There's a seriously strong cast assembled to star alongside Tom Cruise, including Val Kilmer who will be reprising his role from the original film. They're joined by the likes of Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, and Jennifer Connelly. This new trailer for Maverick showed more footage of the supporting cast, check it out below.

There are definitely some cinematic parallels already happening in the trailer for Maverick, which pay homage to Tony Scott's original Top Gun. There's one scene with Miles Teller shirtless on the beach, which feels like a nod to the iconic volleyball scene. There's also some epic shots of Maverick riding his motorcycle, with Jennifer Connelly riding on the back.

I'm eager to see how Top Gun: Maverick connects to the original movie, and builds upon the narrative that began those decades ago. Especially regarding what happened between the title character and Kelly McGillis' Charlotte "Charlie." McGillis wasn't asked to reprise her role in the sequel, so she'll have to be written out. Additionally, Val Kilmer is set to reprise his role as Iceman, although it's currently unclear how he factors into the new story.

The end of this new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick features Tom Cruise's pilot getting an exciting upgrade to his gear. The final moments see Mitchell in some sort of black ops plane, wearing a helmet similar to his iconic skydive from Mission: Impossible- Fallout. Both of these movies show how far Cruise is willing to push himself in order to make the most authentic and thrilling moviegoing experience possible.
