Ataya Aliyeva was born in 1920 in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan). Her father Agakulam was born in Maragha, Iran, into a merchant family. Her mother, Mrs. Humai, was an educated woman and spoke fluently in Persian and Russian. She was from the Iranian city of Tabriz. There were 6 children in the family, she was the eldest child in the family. She graduated from the Baku Theater School. In 1934 she was invited to the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater named after M. Fuzuli. In the theatrical season of 1948-1949, A. Aliyeva, already a well-known actress, was invited to the Ganja Drama Theater. She was filmed with pleasure. In the last years of Ataya Aliyev's life, she was treated for gall bladder. She died in 1995 in Baku. Ataya Aliyeva is the mother of directors Ramiza Hasanoglu and Rauf Suleyman.
