As they update their release schedule, Warner Bros. has revealed that Shazam 2 will be arriving in theaters on April 1, 2022! There is currently no competition for the sequel on that date, but the movie will release one week before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and an Untitled Universal Event Film debut on April 8, 2022.
The studio also revealed that an Untitled WB Film will be released on June 4, 2021, and that their Untitled Sesame Street Film has moved from June 4, 2021, to January 14, 2022. The WB Film will go up against Paramount’s Micronauts while the Sesame Street movie will release against 20th Century Fox’s Nimona and an Untitled Warner Brothers Event Film.
It was reported back in April that screenwriter Henry Gayden had signed on to return to craft a sequel for the comedic superhero effort with director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) likely to return alongside producer Peter Safran, but the studios had yet to officially announce a sequel would begin development and move forward with everyone returning. While no production date has currently been set, Levi did estimate earlier this year that production would begin as early as 2020! Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Shazam!
While Shazam! was largely self-contained, it did open a few doors for a sequel. For example. Billy Batson probably won’t be the only hero in the next movie. The mid-credits scene also introduced a bizarre villain directly from the comic books.
There’s even an allusion to Black Adam early in the film, although not by name. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam for years. However, the decision was made to leave Black Adam out of the Shazam! movie.
Earlier in April, Johnson reacted to the success of Shazam! on his Instagram account. He also indicated that the Black Adam solo movie may finally begin filming in a year or so.
