Smith made his screen debut in 2014, appearing in two episodes of the Nickelodeon series The Thundermans. In 2015, he played the supporting role of Marcus "Radar" Lincoln in the film Paper Towns, and from 2016 to 2017 had a regular role in Baz Luhrmann's TV series Anneal.
In 2017, Smith co-starred in the off-Broadway production of Ian, for which he received Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominations. In 2018, he had a role in the film Ghost and also joined the Jurassic Park franchise, playing the role of Franklin Webb in Jurassic World 2.
In 2019, Smith had a leading role in the movie Pokémon. Detective Pikachu”, and also appeared in a production of the play “Mother” by Florian Zeller. In 2020, he played the title role in the film All the Joyful Places.
