Harry Melling was born in London. He is the grandson of actor Patrick Troughton, who played the Second Doctor in the sci-fi series Doctor Who in the late 1960s. He studied at Headon School in north London, then at Mill Hill School. He attended drama school in North West London and graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Plays at the National Youth Theatre.
Melling starred as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2009. In 2009, he made his National Youth Theater debut in a remake of Mother Courage and Her Children alongside Fiona Shaw, who played his mother Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films. In 2010, he played the role of Gill in the episode "Sorcerer's Shadow" of the BBC television series "Merlin" and starred as Robert Brown in the television series "Just William".
