Horror fans will have to wait a bit longer than expected to see Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s Candyman sequel. According to Variety, Universal’s Candyman is the latest film to have its previously scheduled release date affected by the novel coronavirus. Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, the forthcoming horror flick serves as a continuation of the 1992 movie of the same name.
The Peele-penned sequel once again revolves around an urban legend that warns of a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand who can be summoned by those daring (or foolish) enough to say his name five times into a mirror.
The 2020 continuation will bring viewers back to the same Chicago neighborhood where the urban legend first originated — a neighborhood which has since been given quite the facelift due to good old gentrification.
Originally, Universal planned to release the sequel in theaters on June 12. Now, the forthcoming movie will make its theatrical premiere three months later on September 25, 2020. That Universal has opted to push the release date back for the horror thriller likely won’t come as too much of a shock.
In fact, Candyman is but the latest title to undergo a switch up in its intended release date as a direct result of the coronavirus. Other Universal titles who’ve also had their release dates shuffled include Minions: Rise of Gru, Fast & Furious 9, Sing 2, and Wicked.
