Kettroll 21 avqust 1956-cı ildə Liverpulun Mossley Hill şəhərində anadan olub. Atası Dennis Kettroll tikinti işçisi, anası Şeyn isə evdar qadın idi. Kim üç aylıq olanda ailə Kanadaya mühacirət etdi. On bir il sonra onlar Böyük Britaniyaya qayıtdılar. Orada Kettroll London Musiqi və Dramatik İncəsənət Akademiyasında mühazirələrdə iştirak etdi.
