Biography

Rudy Bednar began his career at ABC in the 1980's as a producer and director at Good Morning America, 20/20 and Primetime Live. His stories took him across the country and around the world - from the Amazon to the North Pole - investigating the bombings of Pan Am 103, into the Masai Mara with Richard Leakey's crusade to end elephant poaching, and on the ground amid crisis, in Tibet, North Korea and the Comoros Islands. At home, he searched for the humanity during the AIDS crisis, and brought you into the lives of runaway teens on the streets of Portland, OR. During the 1990's, as senior producer, Rudy helped launch "Turning Point", the weekly documentary series from ABC News. Correspondent-driven stories included Charles Manson with Diane Sawyer, Nuclear Ground Zero with Peter Jennings, and Switched at Birth with Barbara Walters. By the late 90's and into the 2000's Rudy was Executive Producer of the newly-created ABC News Longform Unit, featuring original hours and multi-part series that included the 13 part cinéma vérité medical series "Hopkins 24/7," "Planet Earth 2000" with Leonardo DiCaprio, and "Tip of the Spear" (Desert Storm) with Ted Koppel. For ABC Entertainment he produced prime time music specials for Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. In 2012, as an executive producer and a director, Rudy launched the first docu-drama series for ABC News, "Final Witness," followed by the series "In An Instant Instant" with Committee Films, now in its 3rd season. In 2013 he was part of the team that created ABC's Lincoln Square Productions (LSP) "The Assets," a true-spy thriller, became the first scripted series for ABC News, with Rudy serving as an executive producer and a director. Next, as an executive producer, came the ABC mini-series "Madoff," with Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner playing the notorious investment couple. He is currently an executive producer for the upcoming Lifetime movie "The Lost Wife of Robert Durst." His most recent documentary work includes directing specials on Ebola, ISIS, Princess Diana and Valdimir Putin. Over the years Rudy's reputation has been built on trust, a quality that allowed him into lives of world figures like Audrey Hepburn, Michael J. Fox, Stephen Hawking, J.K. Rowling, Christopher Reeves, the Dalai Lama, Bill Clinton, Bruce Jenner, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Aaron Copland, Michael Jackson and Bill Gates. He has won ten News & Documentary Emmys, four DuPonts, two Peabodys, and was nominated for two Primetime Emmys.
