When Butler was thirteen years old, at an Orange County fair, he was approached by a representative from an extras casting company and offered to work in the entertainment industry. Butler really liked being an actor and soon began attending acting classes to develop his talent.

The first notable role of the actor can be considered the character of Derek Hanson in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. This was followed by roles in the television series "Zoey 101" (James Garrett), "They were mixed up in the hospital" (James "Wilkie" Wikerson), "Life is Unpredictable" (Jones Mayger), "The Carrie Diaries" (Sebastian Kidd), "The Shannara Chronicles" (Will Ohmsford). Butler has also starred in Aliens in the Attic (Jake Pearson) and Sharpay's Great Adventure (Payton Leverett).

A significant breakthrough in the artist's career can be considered work with Quentin Tarantino on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Charles "Tex" Watson) and Jim Jarmusch on The Dead Don't Die (Jack).

After this success, the next was the main role in the biopic Baz Luhrmann "Elvis". This work of Butler was highly appreciated by Priscilla Presley, after the premiere of the tape in Cannes, the hall applauded standing for 12 minutes.

In May 2022, he confirmed that he would appear as Feid-Raut Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve's sequel Dune.

In August 2022, it became known that the actor, along with Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer, would star in the film "Bikers" by Jeff Nichols.
