In Pierrot le Fou Godard gets a little more self-referential than in his previous films, which is tolerable here as he doesn't go overboard. There's a moment when Marianne asks "Pierrot" why he's doing something. He says, "For the audience," and she turns and looks directly at the audience and says, "Oh." I enjoyed the skewering of upper-class mores and the self-aware self-destructive nature of the characters, which made them engaging as they go about their crime spree. "Pierrot" burns all the money the couple stole at one point, implying his motives at least are not financial. They mention they are surprised the police haven't caught up with them yet. Marianne says the police usually let the criminals self-destruct in these situations.
