Return In ‘The Matrix 4,’ According To Actor Lambert Wilson

21 January, 2020

While we know that “The Matrix 4” is set to go into production soon and hit theaters in May 2021, we still don’t have much of a clue about what the story is about. By the end of the third film, ‘Revolutions,’ the story seemed to be pretty well wrapped up. But Lana Wachowski definitely has a story in mind, as she is writing and directing the film. And according to actor Lambert Wilson, the story involves one of the more, uh, interesting characters from the sequels.

According to Allocine, Wilson, who portrayed The Merovingian in both ‘Reloaded’ and ‘Revolutions,’ is in negotiations to return to the franchise in the upcoming fourth film. However, the actor is concerned that his schedule might conflict with the production and he’ll have to be excluded. Of course, we’ve seen actor changeover in “The Matrix” franchise before, and with the nature of the story, it’s not difficult to give a different face to an already-known character.

In the films, The Merovingian was the name given to a character that provided safe haven for exiled and soon-to-be-deleted programs in the Matrix. For many fans, the introduction of the character in ‘Reloaded’ signaled a moment in the film where you began to realize that the philosophical intentions of the Wachowskis were probably going to overtake the plot and coherency of the series. That being said, Wilson is pretty great in the role and it would be a shame if he isn’t able to star.

If he does return to the franchise, he’ll join the already-announced cast of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. While the roles of the returning actors are already known, it’s unclear who any of the new cast will be portraying. “The Matrix 4” is expected to begin production soon and, as mentioned, will hit theaters on May 21, 2021.
