In November 2019, Barrera starred in the musical film adaptation of Frank Wildhorn's musical based on the novella by Prosper Mérimée Carmen. Barrera was cast in the title role. The film will be directed by French choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied in his directorial debut.
