Butler was born in Singapore. His father is of British and Danish descent, and his mother is Chinese from Malaysia. He moved to the States when he was 4 and was raised by his mother in McLeaney, Virginia.

Butler attended Langley High School, graduating in 2008 and attending Ohio State University, leaving after one year. Soon he moved to Los Angeles and began taking acting lessons.
