Rina Sawayama was born on August 16, 1990 in Niigata, Japan. She lived there until the age of five, when her family decided to move to London, England, where she grew up and currently lives. She studied politics, psychology and sociology at Magdalen College, Cambridge. At the same time, she became interested in music and modeling. During her university years, she was in a hip hop group called Lazy Lion, which also included Theo Ellisom, who is now in Wolf Alice. She graduated from the university with a degree in political science.
