Born in Tomioka, Japan. Studied linguistics at Tohoku University. Moved to the US to study film and English at California State University, Long Beach. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Conservatory of the American Film Institute. Among the cameramen who influenced him, he singles out Rodrigo Prieto, Emmanuel Lubezki, Conrad Hall, Gordon Willis and Robert Richardson. He worked in the second camera group (eng. Second Unit) on such films as "Babylon", "The Great Game", "Eat, Pray, Love", "Eagle of the Ninth Legion" and "Monte Carlo".

He has been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers since 2015.
