Razzie 2019 Winners Include Holmes & Watson, Donald Trump

24 February, 2019

The winners of the 2019 Razzie Awards winners have been announced. Since its start back in 1981, when the very first Golden Raspberry winners were announced in Los Angeles at a humble event in Razzie co-founder John J. B. Wilson’s living room, the awards ceremony - which honors the worst films of the year - has grown into a globally recognized dressing down of Hollywood’s biggest mistakes.

This year marks the 39th incarnation of the Razzie Awards, with well-known movies such as Friday the 13th, Annie, Speed 2: Cruise Control, Grown Ups 2, and Transformers: Age of Extinction having been (dis)honored with Golden Raspberry trophies over the years. The award itself is equally as unimpressive as a nomination or win, consisting of a golf-ball sized raspberry atop a Super 8mm film reel that's been spray-painted gold. The nominations for the 39th Razzie Awards were revealed late last month, and as is tradition for the intentionally tacky awards ceremony, the winners are announced the day before the Academy Awards.

The 2019 Razzie nominees were a mixed bunch, but were lead overall by Will Ferrell and John C Riley’s Sherlock Holmes spoof, Holmes & WatsonAs suspected by many, Holmes & Watson took home the most trophies, winning all four categories it was nominated for: Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel; Worst Supporting Actor (Riley); Worst Director (Etan Cohen), and the biggest prize of them all, Worst Picture. Other big winners included Donald Trump, who snatched up two awards for his role in Michael Moore’s documentary Fahrenheit 11/9, as well as Death of a Nation. Check out the full list of winners below.

Many assumed that Will Ferrell was going to take home the Worst Acting Razzie, but a surprise twist occurred. Instead, President Donald Trump won Worst Actor for his work on Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9 as himself. Trump "and his self-perpetuating pettiness" took top honors in the Worst Screen Combo category for both of the aforementioned documentaries. Trump administration political counselor Kellyanne Conway took home the Worst Supporting Actress Razzie for her work on Fahrenheit 11/9 as herself. Trump has yet to respond to his Razzie wins, but one can assume that he will be very happy about the awards.

Razzie Redeemer Award - Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Perhaps the oddest wins of the year were those of Melissa McCarthy, who received a Worst Actress Razzie for her role in The Happytime Murders, but also a Razzie Redeemer award for Can You Ever Forgive Me?McCarthy is up for a Best Actress Oscar at this weekend’s Academy Awards and could join a rather elite group should she win the award. Only three other actors have won both a Razzie and an Oscar in the same weekend – Alan Menken, Brian Helgeland and Sandra Bullock. Overall, not much stock is typically put in the Razzie Awards aside from its comic relief, but even that has dwindled for some over the years, with the ceremony having been labelled as arrogant and sanctimonious.

Since its start, The Razzies certainly have offered a much needed ribbing of Hollywood’s least spectacular efforts, though the idea that anyone, anywhere can take part in the voting (as long as they pay a $40 fee) somewhat lessens the legitimacy of the decisions that are made. For instance, the 2019 Razzies features no less than two wins by the President of the United States in a first time, off the wall surprise. Still, despite some negative views of The Razzies, it’s unlikely that this decades old tradition is going to disappear any time soon.
