Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, Disney and Marvel Studios have released a fresh batch of harmless new images that reveal absolutely nothing. Well, nothing beyond our core Avengers team looking super sadand contemplative. Of course, you’d feel the same if a lot of your friends just dusted into thin air. It’ll be interesting to see how much of the film is spent on that dramatic beat—the aftermath of Thanos’s snap, and how that emotionally affects our heroes.
Avengers: Endgame isn’t just the end of a major epoch in the MCU, it’s a culmination of a decade’s worth of movies.
To reflect that, Fandango’s Movieclips has mashed up Endgame footage with dramatic moments and trailer clips from almost all the movies that came before.
The Ultimate Trailer Mashup is a well-edited exercise in looking both forward and backward. From the last sacrifices all the way back to the first, to the moments of drama and death that got us from Coulson’s loss in Avengers to the big dusting in Infinity War.
But they’ve got each other, and the plot of Endgame appears to revolve around the OG Avengers team re-assembling (with some additions like Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, Nebula, and Rocket Raccoon) to chase the ghost of a good thing: reverse Thanos’s snap and bring their friends back from the “dead”—even if that means sacrificing themselves in the process.
Indeed, it very much feels like sacrifice will be a major theme of Endgame, as it’s also been one of the major themes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. It began with Iron Man, in which Tony Stark sacrificed his privacy to out himself as a superhero. Along the way, folks like Captain America, Thor, and especially Hawkeye have sacrificed much in their lives to save others. So the question remains, who makes it out of Endgame unscathed?
We only have a week left to wait, so for now take a gander at these new images—most of which are screenshots from the already-released trailers. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Josh Brolin, and the voice of Bradley Cooper. Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 24th.
